What characterises oily skin is its excessive production of sebum, its greyish and sometimes yellowish colouring, and its lack of brightness. It is oily, shiny, sometimes blotchy and acne-prone, with dilated follicles. It is often full of open comedones (blackheads) that become dark due to a cellular oxidation reaction, or are covered by cells from the stratum corneum leading to the formation of whiteheads, in which certain species of the microbiota tend to proliferate favouring inflammatory processes with consequent acne.
